I have seen a dyno facility in a rural area which used 55 gallon drums laid on their side filled with old car tires.
The noise level was surprisingly low.

I have heard of this before but haven't seen it.

Was there several drums welded together for each muffler?
Did they have an end cap with a pipe for the exit?
