Econo.Racer, so true! I sit here looking at where the backhoe did it's work and I can only see $8000 that could have been project car money (paint, a new motor, transmission, trailer)...

My 406 in the Beaumont made 540/525 hp/tq with AFR 195's Competition CNC ported heads, Vic JR HP750 carb and a Voodoo 243/251 HR cam. 10.5:1 compression. I've never raced it so can't provide any times but it pulls hard enough to give you a headache and is still very driveable. To improve driveability I swapped the Vic Jr with an Eddy Tunnel Ram and a couple a 600 Eddy carbs. I have AFR 210's on my 427 SBC and made over 650 hp with those and a TR. Either head will work fine with the hp levels you're looking at. My preference would be the 195's though.

Steve K, I have been reading a few comments about people saying the AFR valve job doesn’t seal. I hate to spend $2K and still have to have work done on the heads. Did your AFR’s work well out of the box or did you have them looked over at the machine shop?

My engine builder checked them out and other than swapping to beehive springs they didn't need any work. They've been on this engine for 10 years now without issue.

I agree that mid 11's are pretty doable without breaking the bank witnessed by a couple examples that have been shared. Getting to 11-teens or high 10's seems to be a big step up. I always wondered how reliable a solid roller could be for a mostly street driven car. It sucks that you had a rough time with Eagle stuff. Were the 220 heads you ran cast iron or aluminum?
Glad to be of help if I can!
I think the problem with the Eagle stuff I used on that motor was it was the cheaper "cast steel" crank. The first one checked out better, the second one was terrible. That said, it's still running...

The heads I had were aluminum. The Pro Action/Pro Topline stuff was quirky but seemed to work.

How far off am I??

My 68 RS, basically stock everything except I may have had the fiberglass hood at the time, PS, PB, Steel Rallys, 406 with aluminum heads, was 3180 without me in it on scales.

My combo, really average build i think.
89 pump gas,
817 block,
4.155 bore,
9.9:1 compression,
6” rods, scat rotator, srp postons
1.6/1.6 LGM shafts,
Weingartner profiler heads and performer rpm intake, (divider cut down, supersucker spacer yada yada yada,
Heads started as 195cc and ended up 213ccs, 2.08 valves, chambers ended up at 68ccs
AED 950 carb,
Straub custom squishy cam, (straub told me this combo would do 500/500 without breaking a sweat)
Attatchments are for head specs and cam card and dyno, hard to read sorry..

Dyno headers were cheap 1 3/4” schoenfelds with 3” collector and single 3” exhaust

513hp at 6000rpm/535odd lb/ft heading downwards at 3500

Have elston exhaust and headers now, project has sat literally untouched for 5 years so still havnt dynoed with them or finished the car..not long now though..getting it driveable now to try sell, another month itll be there

Similar to my 421 same heads, but I have a Vic. Jr. & Qjet, 421 header to 2.5 collector, 1.65 in 1.5 ex same cam but mine has 5 deg less intake dur.
Just wondering if the intakes make the 1000 rpm difference in tq peaks?
