Cheap SBC aluminum heads..

Post by pdq67 »

I had my Son order these for me.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/FOR-CHEVY-SMAL ... Swb2JbovTf

Total: $321.80

So I guess I will see how good they actually are.

Cheap enough because I can 't melt beer cans this cheap to pour a pair..

Be prepared to have about $1000 worth of work done to them to correct everything that's screwed up......There's a reason they are that cheap....

I'm expecting it so if it costs too much money, I will not refurbish them.

i spoke to a local shop that builds a fair amount of high performance small blocks. their position on them was sure, they are cheap, but by the time everything is corrected you will have almost a grand in them, and it is a 50/50 shot if the heat treat was done right. Also not good for power adder stuff due to thin decks.

He did say for a mild street combo they are not to bad, and definitely a better starting point than an old set of stock iron 461/462 heads, and they can be ported to get decent flow, the chambers are not bad. He said for their cost a better starting point would be a set of the new afr enforcer heads, at least you know they have good parts and the machining is better than average. He is not a dealer for any particular brand. just his experience with the cheap stuff that customers have brought him. it was an interesting conversation because the guy made it clear up front he would make more money off of the cheap heads vs going with a set of afr, trick flow, or rhs heads. and after he corrected everything the out of the box name brand heads would make more power, and in the end that is the way he steers his customers.

Some very common problems that have been found with those heads and similar are guides that aren't positioned correctly, loose fitting guides, poor machine work, loose or poorly installed seats, very cheap material used in the seats, etc....other times the port locations are off, port shapes are horrible........

There are head guys out there that buy the raw castings and can produce a very good head a a very reasonable price, but they too have horror stories of "fixing" cheap heads just to make them usable...

I looked at the ad and it has the ebay (100% buyer satisfaction) & says (FREE 30 day returns), so basically look them over well and if you find a issue or just don't like them start a return and you'll get a label(pretty sure free) to send them back. Your just out inspection time or cost basically.

Just got another set, it looks like these are prob the same as my 1st set with vortec ports and possibly larger 68cc chambers, I'd like to CC a chamber to see if they are 68 since I couldn't for the set I have with bad exh seats. If this set checks out, so far I'm 1/1 n this will be the tie breaker.

They look like the pro-comp speedmaster casting, I tried to use a pair on a 400 a few years back and there were two rocker studs on each head that were not located correctly-there was no easy way to correct it

Plus taxes. The last set I bought for my 2.0 video was $371 but they have more common intake flange ports and should be 64cc chambers

The size of the bowl doesn't leave much room to correct the shape unless a 2.05 or 2.08 valve can be installed, unknown what the short turn looks like. I would rather have a 180cc or 190cc port with room to make corrections

Let me know what you think of them and how they look, I may be interested in getting a set too to see what I can do with them.
