Shock loading on a chain is a big factor with one or few cylinders. Decades ago I pondered doing a cog belt drive primary for my Vincent road racer. Using the formula provided by Morse, I discovered that a 4" wide belt was good for up to ~ 12 hp! It didn't occur to me that this was an "infinite life" industrial rating with a huge shock-loading factor so I shelved the scheme. Of course such belts are common on motorcycles now and transmit (however briefly) 1,000 HP plus to TF blowers... #-o

How wide is the Morse chain on the TH425 Toronado/Eldorado front-drive transmission?
