Opinions Of This Deck Finish???

Post by BOOT »

Ok so I got this used procomp head from a friend to make a comparison video and the deck looks like the worst I've ever seen. I had a m-shop tell me that a smoother head deck was unacceptable even when I told them that I was using a blue felpro. Still honestly I don't mess with this stuff a lot but between all the heads I've ever seen, including several friends I've helped never seen one this rough. So if you wanna comment on the video n let my friend know what yah think thx, for me just comment here. He's not into forums or online stuff so if you want him to know the video would be the only way he'll see it. [Full disclosure, comments help my video so if you don't wanna help my video, then don't like or comment on it.] I've included a picture for those who don't wanna watch the video.

Extensive development work by Goetze has indicated the need for a very smooth head surface, not rough.

The reason is due to thermal expansion and contraction which tears up the gasket surface with use.

Yeah the surface finish is crap.
I'm assuming the heads are aluminum. Aluminum heads you want very smooth.
I'm also baffled by how he stretched 30 seconds of content into ten minutes.

Usually the people that tell you that you need a rough finish, are not capable of giving you a finer finish.

Prob never know but maybe since it seems a few think it was the machine, my friend using that info could make an argument to get them fixed/redone by that shop. I'd just go someplace else but they are his heads so it's his choice.

I know on youtube... longer vids are better revenue generators, so, your not doing it wrong.

That may be an acceptable surface for a conventional gasket on iron surface, maybe. tho not ideal. Would like to see the peaks farther apart and maybe not as deep.

You could lap the head on a big surface plate to fix it. As it is.... it's half done, only rough milled

I've seen worse, looked like a body file.
It could only have been intentional & was, F'd over a customer on vacation with a blown HG. claimed it was a necessary rebuild, with a parting shot nasty head surface good enough to get'em home by not much.
No gasket will seal that without a lot of goop & only temporarily unless it's a low CR & driven by a little old lady.

Failed to mention earlier.

The same very smooth surface requirement also applies to the block as well.

There should be an Ra value available from the gasket mfg.

But then who now owns a surface profilometer?

What do you guys do with a cylinder head that is already set for chamber volume, or at the seat ring and can't be milled anymore? When it comes back for a freshen.

Like a Comp head or Super Stock head.

Yah even a block I've cleaned up a few times is much better than this head.

Thx couldn't remember what those things(profilometer) were called. On another forum someone suggested "cheap Ra comparator strips", didn't know they had those and might get some.
