Post by prairiehotrodder »

anyone have a suggestion for the very best high temp header paint ? I have very expensive set of Lemons headers i want to bring back to life. Header paint just doesn't seem to last very long.

i'd suggest finding someone to ceramic coat them. little more expensive, but run cooler, and the headers will last so much longer.

The best header paint I have found to date is VHT brand. It's expensive as far as paint goes, but when properly applied it don't burn and flake off like others I have tried. Most cheap header paints are 1200° and that is not enough.

I would send them to SWAIN TECH and have them "White Lightning" coated which is paint-able to whatever color you want and it will now last.

This is the best I've found, didn't burn off even after a doz. dyno pulls, never even changed color.

I use this stuff from Eastwood, seems to stay on well. I have some black ceramic coated custom headers on my race car, and they coating burns off at the head flange, I just take some of the eastwood black and brush it on and it blends right in. You can brush it on or spray it.

Ceramic coating first choice, PlastiKote second choice if you need to use an aerosol.

Cheers.

I saw somewhere this stuff held up good and think I'm gonna try it on some manifolds https://deipowersports.com/products/exh ... ne-coating

Your local Canadian tire probably has some of this stuff;

Brush on high heat Tremclad,or there is also a rattle can version;

I have used the brush on stuff and it works pretty good.

If you read the instructions on some of the header spray paint cans some tell you to bake the paint in after you coat the surface it will make it last longer.

As with any painting operation, prep is even more important than application

I've found very fine crushed (angular) glass blast media works well, etches the surface without chewing it up to much, and is cheap ........ but anything sharp that doesn't leave a residue will probably do

I wouldn't personally use or recommend sand, it has health implications, but some don't seem to care

Regardless, and as said, some of the products available simply won't stay on despite prep and curing

The high temp VHT brand stuff works ok for diy application

Vht 2000 deg. Stuff works awesome

I have long tubes on my bbc turbo car. Painted them and wrapped them in exhaust wrap. Paint still on it and i have run it on the dyno to 1500+ whp and many street pulls. Lots of street time so far.

i used the VHT spay cans. It was all i could find locally without ordering something. I liked the way it goes on. Looks good. I guess i'll find out how long it lasts. Thanks for all your suggestions.
