062 Vortec Head Test a Success Car goes 10.92

Post by 1980RS »

After running low 11's with my pump gas 358, I decided to pull a quick one and put the 406 test engine in with the 062 Vortec heads I reworked. They were mildly ported and have some epoxy in places but still retain the stock valve size. For this test I was going to run the GM Performance dual plane but gut instinct said try the ported SV that's made for the Vortec's. Well I am glad I did and here is the first run off the trailer.

1st. run, 11.02@120 mph 1.49 60ft.
2nd run, Changed to a 50% underdrive pulley on the crank
10.92@119.67 mph with a 1.48 60ft. 1/8 mile was 6.86!!

Ran a few more runs all in the high tens except for the last run and it rattled the tires so that was it for me. I am truly blown away with this combo and this is with the Cyclone $59 headers 1 5/8" as my Hooker S/C will not seal at the ports. I feel like I have a Vortecpro engine in my car LOL. Honestly the car felt like I put a 125hp shot on it.

It was a fun night.

Agree, they're good heads. Just wish we could find enough used Vortec heads which aren't cracked. Last week, my machinist threw out ten in a row.

When I bought the 062's I only wanted the Crane rocker he had but nope have to buy it all he said. So for $100 I took the heads and rockers, funny thing is, I never used the rockers but I sure like the heads.

Care to share the rest of the combination? While I like the Vortecs and have run them as well as the aftermarket versions (RHS Pro Torker) I couldn't hope to achieve that performance with the street platform I have. Given that's only 355 CID.
Just the same , well done.
I sold my original Vortecs, fully machined for 500 bucks. Guy that bought them was a performance shop owner and he gave them a quick crack check and handed me the cash. Got the Comp 26918 springs as well. Those heads were high mileage too and had run a 240 degrees across half the country once towing a trailer behind the IROC!
True story.

Thats what happens when you dont put the typically recommended 220cc heads with 2.1 valves and 93% throats on your combo, your probably around 180-185 cc and shifting 6-6500, welcome to matching velocity needs to cubic consumption

If you do turn up a set that is not cracked and there is a cryogenic treating service close enough to you then get them treated before maching and then they will not crack on you !

FWIW, we look for the truck and 1-ton van heads which came with hard seats installed. They're almost never cracked.

I can see why it's quick. (The cast crank is a little frightening though!)
Thanks for the info.

Nice running combo. Really surprised that the off the shelf converter is working so well.

What does the car weigh?

Around 3420 without me in it, so close to 3600 lbs.

So what causes the cracking? I have a set of over-the-counter GM 062s on my 355 (made in '08 or so). The water temp never goes over 200 deg, and I have a good tune and free-flowing exhaust. Do I still need to worry about these developing cracks someday?

Just had it weighed a few months ago. Last year I had a BBC in the car.
