Dart 215 SBC Heads Potential

Post by 1980RS »

I picked up a set of Dart 215's SBC for a song this week as the guy who had them on his 355 was really disappointed with them. I can see why as the heads are not meant for a mild hyd engine. They only had 500 miles on them but my question is on a 406 type engine what power potential do these heads have over lets say a Sportsman II 200cc head and can you really make some good power with these out of the box?

i think they are one of the worst Heads out-the-box ,
but there's a whole bunch of HP potential
waiting for you in those Heads .

i Dyno tested an early pair of Dart 215cc out-the-box
and from memory , was only 487 Peak HP ,
i think this was a 406cid .

the Dart Pro 1 215 or 230cc Heads are not that great out-the-box
but they end up one of the best Heads to use for maximum HP
if you Port them correctly .

Chevy Beretta 2450 Lbs runs 8.39 ET 162+ MPH ( all Motor HP , no NOS runs )
with Dart Pro 1 215cc Ported to 245Cc Int Ports
4.187x4.000=440.6cid
Peak TQ = 589.3 @ 6600
Peak HP = 807.5 @ 8300
600 rpm/sec
-----------------------------------
on old TV show "Passtime"
it ran
60 FT= 1.089
330 Ft= 3.110
660 Ft= 4.797 - 145.83 MPH
1000 Ft= 6.251
1320 Ft= 7.493 at 186.36 MPH

4.30 gear
2450 lb
325. Nos
-------------------------------------
later made 816 Peak HP @ 8200 RPM
ran 8.28 ET in killer Air, all Motor

Don’t write off your sportsman 2 heads. When ported correctly they can make power and go fast. I have done a few sets that make 650-660hp

I have had good luck with both set of Sportsman II heads I have had but what's really funny when my 062 Vortec heads outshine the Sportsman heads that are ported and with less cam and compression. After reading what maxrace did with the Dart 215's there is some real power there after they are done right.

like MELWAY , i also made in the 650 HP range with Sportsman II cast-iron Heads !

Brodix Track 1 also have a ton of HP potential , not so great out-the-box HP ,
i grind my best Dart Pro 1 intake port shape into the Brodix Track 1,
and on 2 identical SBC 442cid , the Track 1 and Dart Pro 1 were within 1 HP of each other = 816.0 @8200-8300 RPM
