Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
Is this a stock headed 283 are a modified headed 283 and with a stock bore and stroke are one with a big bore short stroke to make a 283.
Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
Any decent NHRA Super Stock 283/220 horse engine makes well in excess of 500 hp.
This is with ported factory iron #520 or #896 heads. Even though they are reshaped, they have to retain the factory 140 cc intake ports/60 cc exhaust ports, 54.9 cc chambers, 1.72/1.50 valves, flat top pistons and the 4QC carb.

Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
Wow! Obviously horses for 1/4-mile courses. But still, I had no idea more than 500 horsepower was possible with those OEM parts.
From what little I've heard about the cam profiles necessary to be competitive in Super Stock, they're pretty rough on valve train parts.
Just for the sake of conversation, if a 220hp 283" were to be competing in 1 to 2 hour vintage stock road races, what horsepower could one make and live for a whole season of racing with no valve train failures?

Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
What are the engine rules for the class? Verry different builds depending on parts that are allowed.
Aftermarket heads & manifold & carbureator?
Compression ratio?
Stock bore / stroke size?
Camshaft rules?
Need more information for a good recommendation.

Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
Very doable. Eather a all out race engine with aluminum heads fabricated tunnel ram with 2 carburetors or a
NHRA SS engine. Over 10 years ago a friend of mine raced NHRA SS automatic with a 327 and made 600+ with a quadrojet.
2 hp/CID yes very doable.

Great!!
Keep it coming...
I love this stuff.................
How about just the 8 to 10,000 rpm, little 3" short stroked engines!
I know a Z28 302 engine will do this...

Has to be stock displacement and look stock outside and under the rocker covers. No titanium, no roller rockers.
Not for very often or very long. I was there in the day and saw most of them blow up when the owners believed this motor city legend that you could shift a stock Z28 at 10,000. Even 8,000 was way past the power peak and would only be tolerated a very short time. How about just the 8 to 10,000 rpm, little 3" short stroked engines! I know a Z28 302 engine will do this...

Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
The practical and affordable way to make 500bhp from a 283 or similar engine is to supercharge it.

Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
No reason to build a 500hp 283 when you do the same with a 400 SBC that will make 500hp and 3 times the torque of that 283. Build one, let us know how it works our for you.
Re: 500 hp 283 engines.
This is a 265" NHRA Super Stock engine, complete with Cater WCFB carb (1-1/16" primaries and 15/16" secondaries). Power and torque are proprietary info, of course. To say it was impressive is an understatement.
A quick pic on it's way up the ladder. Savvy types might connect some dots.... :
