Technical inspections can happen during or after the race at the discretion of NHRA
Protests by other racers or car owners must be filed the day prior to eliminations of the class and must put in writing.
NHRA Officials have the discretion to enter a protest any any time during the race.

But an oversize cam core isn't in accordance to the "OEM configuration and size", and nothing in the NHRA Engine Blueprint Specifications says it IS allowed, so why is it ok?
Because it is not enforced. If NHRA was to enforce the rule right now, I would say at least that the vast majority of the fast SBC 23 degree head SBC's have a larger core camshaft.

Many of the best tech inspectors quit their jobs because they were overridden by a former manager at the main office when they found violations. For the longest time there had been favoritism for some racers and no equality. If you were a racer that complained, you had to make sure you carried gaskets and sealer because you were going to be torn down at the next race. One of my customers complained about getting horsepower while his competitors with other brands that were going faster did not. As a results, he got chosen for tear downs 5 times in one year. After the last tear down, he told NHRA that next time, they would be receiving a letter from his lawyer. He did not get another teardown.

the only time i ever got personally Protested was 1969
at Pel State Dragstrip in Opelousas , LA
by local Chevrolet Zone Rep who was running a L88 Corvette
and i was running 1968 396/375HP Chevelle 4-speed
in C/MP only because i put on a Holley 3-Barrell Carb .

Chevrolet Zone Rep claimed i really had a 427cid , not a 396 :)
Chevrolet Zone Rep also claimed he was running
a 366cid tall-deck truck BBC engine in his L88 Corvette instead of the 427cid
(Note: i had previously beat the Rep in a street race a few weekends before Pel State)

back then i knew enough to tell his engine was a 427 instead of a 366
from looking at water pump bolt-hole location on a 366 vs 427
i pointed it out to Tech guy that theres no way its a 366 block
so his protest back-fired , he was dis-qualified :)
they let me race instead :)

i can't remember if there was any protest money put up ??
all i remember is this happened in line in tech inspection
before the Racing began

Chevrolet Zone Rep Name withheld to protect the "guilty" :)

C/MP!!!! A Modified guy. I miss Modified Eliminator.
the only requirement for C/MP back then was steel cable running underneath engine
and a strap or turnbuckle for anti-rotation of engine or steel engine mounts

Holley 950 cfm 3 barrell carb i modified with mechanical secondaries linkage
also put on a primary 50CC pump + installed copper tubes squirters to secondaries
made it into 4-squirter Carb

2 Carter electric Fuel Pumps in trunk with toggle switch hidden in ashtray
+ 1 hi-volume mechanical pump on engine

Mallory 4-lobe Distributor + large condensers on outside of distributor
Rajay Spark Plug terminals , Accel steel core wires + Accel Coil

Bowl-ported rectangle-port closed chamber cast-iron heads + 30 backcut on intake valves
no port matching done , just bowl porting at that time
redid valve job at Trade School in Abbeville with KwikWay Valve and seat grinder
i didn't get my own KwikWay Valve Grinder setup until 1972

M&H Racemaster 7" wide slicks , 5.14:1 rear gears, Sun Tach ,
Hurst/Gabriel 90/10 front shocks , 50/50 rear shocks
homemade adjustable pinion snubber , homemade Ladder Bars, launch at up to 7000 RPM
most times at least 5500+ RPM , Zoom purple clutch disc + pressure plate

the Chevy Rep's L88 Corvette was faster than me at the Dragstrip
but i was faster in a Street Race :)

use to look for Street Races in Lafayette starting on southside of City
at Judice Inn Hamburger place ( still voted best Hamburger in Lafayette many times to this day )
-to- northside at Dave's Top Hat ( another Hamburger place )
Dave's Top Hat was best place to setup a Street Race + 4-lane just a few blocks away to race on .
near Dave's , was an empty Lot , i use to Trailer my Chevelle with Slicks on + Open Headers
.. the only Racing Street Rules questions were :
are we going to race with street tires or slicks on?
open Headers or closed Headers ??
and how much Money ? ... i mostly raced for fun of it :)
good old days !

great coincidence : i have house full of relatives for Thanksgiving and my oldest Daughter starts talking about "Fargo" the movie, one of her favorites .
My Son bought a wood chipper ... so that started the talk about wood chipper in "Fargo" ( Fargo , North Dakota )
also the Canadian/Minnesota accents/dry humour in Fargo :)
the little 2-cents stamp :)

Thanks again. and by the way, Ya you betcha!

THE "INN" WAS FIRST OPENED ON APRIL 5, 1947 BY TWO BROTHERS, ALCIDE AND MARC JUDICE

Before I raced in Stock Eliminator I would pay more attention to the record page than almost anything else. I knew who the movers and shakers were and knew someday I would be listed on that page in ND. I was driven by that desire.
Dropping the ball is a huge understatement. NHRA (a.k.a. No Hot Rods Alowed) has been fumbling at the 5 yard line for many years.

As a new piston company in 1998 we watched the records closely, particularly Stock Eliminator but also Super Stock and Comp Elim. Many of our customers would send us a copy of their awards and they usually had crew and/or sponsors on them. That's how you paid recognition to the people who gave up their family time and weekends. To remove that is unconscionable and to remove the records altogether just shows how little they care about the whole Sportsman Category.

I get duplicate copies of my National Records and mount them to a wooden plaque with a picture of my car and a brass plaque engraved with a thank you and spell it out who is recognized. Does wonders for getting future help! And I’m not necessarily talking freebies, I’m talking getting the top-shelf technical info. PRICELESS!
Hope to be doing that again...soon!

Great story!!!! And thanks for the vintage hop up details. And as illegal as it was, street racing back then was the real deal. Something modern television will never capture, no matter how they label it or how many clowns they pack under their proverbial big top.
