Re: NHRA 283cid Stocker Engine
American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) 360cid
put out more than 700 hp and close to 600 lb.-ft. of torque on Methanol
need minimum of 14.5:1 compression
most use : 2-Step 1.625 , 1.750 Tube OD
so how can a much smaller NHRA 283cid with only 373 Peak HP
use same Header Tube OD sizes ???

Re: NHRA 283cid Stocker Engine
Again.........look exactly how it carries power past peak.
Racing a NA NHRA stocker should be mandatory before any posting.
Re: NHRA 283cid Stocker Engine
OK, I'll play. What are the factors that allow it to carry the power past peak like it does?

Re: NHRA 283cid Stocker Engine
My guess that one thing would be a super good valve job and port manipulation on the the exhaust side but I am sure there are other things that help make that happen.

Re: NHRA 283cid Stocker Engine
BES's 283 Stocker engine should have about 1.705" Hg. of Plenum vacuum @ 6500 RPM point of Peak HP
with the relatively restricted 4GC Carb on a dual-plane manifold .
coupled with just short stroke of 3.01300" + the plenum vacuum "rate effect" ... can extend the HP Curve
another good test would have been to put a single-plane manifold + like a 750 CFM Holley carb to see what RPM it would then make its Peak HP at ?
what i'm trying to point out is , in Dyno tests w/2-barrell restricted Carbs that might pull 5 to 7+ inches of plenum vacuum
those test's data sometimes show what appears to be wider RPM range with a HP curve similar to BES's 283
and when we just put on a 750CFM 0-8156 Carb the engine makes another 60 to 90 Peak HP and gives you a different HP Curve
that's not as wide or extended !
anyways , a short stroke crank typically byitself will give you a wider Range HP Curve
this works great for Formula One engines with their very short stroke cranks !

take a look at this Thread Link , the SBF Dyno Sheet
viewtopic.php?p=876301#p876301
download/file.php?id=25213&mode=view
Peak TQ = 414.4 to 413.0 @ 4000 to 4100 RPM
Peak TQ = 410.0 @ 5100 RPM has another small TQ Peak
Peak HP = 447.9 @ 6500 RPM ... still pretty good up to 7100 RPM
even with Plenum Vacuum climbing to -6.0 "Hg. +
6500 RPM - 4100 RPM = 2400 RPM width
so the Plenum Vacuum Rate effect
can change a TQ and HP Curve enough to make it look extended and/or flatter
but in reality if Plenum Vacuum were in range of 0.7" to 1.2" or no more than 1.5"Hg
this same Engine Combo would not give you as wide or extend HP Curve
but instead would make a lot more Peak TQ and Peak HP
this larger Dirt Track restricted Ford SBF shows about same effects as BES 283 NHRA Stocker HP Curve w/restricted 4GC Carb + dual-plane

Re: NHRA 283cid Stocker Engine
Off topic, but will probably fit in here?
What engine combination allows an engine to have both the Hp and T curves to continue to go up after they cross at 5252 rpm?
Please list compression ratios as well as cam spec's.
The reason I ask is that if not mistaken, the old L-88 engine did this?
Not sure about the Z-28, 302 engine?
Thanks,
pdq67

Re: NHRA 283cid Stocker Engine
extreme example would be Formula One Engine under older Rules :pdq67 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 10:52 am Off topic, but will probably fit in here?

Formula_One_V8_Cosworth_2006_146.38cid_19250RPM__755HP__214TQ
RPM HP
16000 614
17000 694 <<-- Peak TQ @ this RPM = 214.4
18000 731
18500 744
19000 754
19250 755 = BSFC = 275g/kW-Hour = 13.408558 Air/Fuel Ratio <<-- Peak HP
19500 747
20000 711
Notice that super short stroke gives you 19250 - 17000 = 2250 RPM spread between Peak TQ and Peak HP
Stroke = 1.56496
Rod C-C = 4.02195
2.57:1 Rod Ratio
