Come in and judge my timing chain tension

Post by bthomas »

I have 2 sets of timing assemblies I’ve tried. One is the original set that came with car and the other is a 5 under set. Both are rollmaster billet.
Engine is sbc.

sorry I can't be of any help pal, but the way you have those vids just looping along without clicking anything is slick!

So you can open those pix OK? On my screen it just reads "image" and the cursor won't change to the hand to open them.. :(

They're both looser than my Rollmaster set but I haven't started the engine yet. I hope that's not typical.

The five under one looks just right to me. (Thanks for the link Kevin.)

Agree on the -5 chain. I had a new chain and gear in a new block about as loose as yours. I didn't like it and was about to change to a shorter chain before I took into consideration it being an aluminum block. So I left it alone. It's hard to gauge something like that but I would rather it be a little loose than risk the block expanding more than expected and binding.

For my aluminum BBC, I calculated ~ 0.005" more cam to crank spacing hot vs. cold than for an iron one.

That sounds right. I came up with ~.004 more based on the spacing and 100 degree change on my small block.
