283 pistons, #7003, sealed power??

Post by falcongeorge »

I have a set of old forged factory replacement pop up 283 pistons (270hp/283hp) here, they are stamped #7003 on the tops, I THINK these are Sealed Power, but my early '80s Sealed Power catalog only lists the #2013PX flat tops, doesnt list anything for 270/283hp 283's. Anybody have a sealed power catalog that shows the number for '57-'61 pop-up corvette 283 pistons? Or does this 7003 number ring any bells? I know these aren't TRW, they were L2148/49.

Is there anything in the inside of them ? I have a bunch of old catalogs and interchanges at the shop. I will take a look in the AM if nobody else has answered.

Nothing on the inside. I'm pretty comfortable 7003 is the part number, and they "look" like Sealed Power, but my 1980 catalog doesn't list the pop-up pistons. The 7003 number rings a bell, but its been a LONG time. Thanks for checking Bill.

7003 could be a vintage Speed Pro piston, are they forged?

Try looking it up in a Speed Pro catalogue. Domed forged pistons were not sold under the Sealed Power banner. They were sold under the Speed Pro banner. My 1990 Speed Pro catalogue does not list that particular piston. It lists 7044P, 7045P, 7027P & 7001P forged domed pistons for a 283 Chev.

You may need an older Speed Pro catalogue to find your piston.

Hope this helps.

George,
I have looked through every book I have here and cannot find a thing. Maybe a picture would help someone recognize it ?

OEM domed pistons were sold under Sealed Power.

I could take a pic, but they are the same as Chevy OEM domed pistons for 270hp/283hp motors. its possible they could be Jahns or Forgedtrue, they are out of a motor a friend had in his race car in the late sixties.

I have a 85 Speed pro catalog, and it lists 7000, 7001, 7002, and 7005 as SBC pistons. Logical that 7003 is SBC prior to 85.

I'm surprised guys aren't familiar with these, they are the generic Chevy OEM pop-ups, the same dome shape was used in 350hp/365hp and 375hp 327's I built literally dozens of 283's and 327's with the chevy OEM pop-ups as a teenager. I must be getting old.

Yup, that makes perfect sense Thanks Ken!
