Post by steve cowan »

I have bought some new stones ruby reds, white and waiting on some cool blues.
Question-
Can you face both sides of the stone to desired angle?? Or is this not recommended
Thanks in advance.

I have with my old stone set, but I only then use those added angles for top or bottom cuts never the actual seat.

That being said if you have a junk head and the as you should have seat in out gauge then try it , and if the run out is .001" or less your Golden!

Not quite sure what 'Synchro' stones are, but if they're symmetrical threaded bush stones such as Sioux, reversing and dressing both sides, usually with a different angle, is common

Some manufacturers' stones come formed that way

It can allow more stone dressing before you get into the threaded insert with the diamond

Just watch the margin when it starts to get thin and sharp, usually on larger stones ..... dress them at ninety to thicken up, and they'll obviously then fit smaller seats

But you probably knew all this anyway ........

Of course take the stone manufacturers guidelines on board ...... but in the real world

If they're directional mount, like Hall, then the above is moot

As a reminder all stones should be dressed at a 90' angle this will help balance and align the stone to the stone holder.
Also when the stone is turned over the stone needs to be redressed

Steve, and apologies if this is also obvious ......

When dressing stones, depth of cut and speed the diamond is swept can affect the relative coarseness, and the finish any given stone will produce

Keep the diamond sharp, rounded diamonds rub & ‘pluck’ rather than cut

Bolt the dressing stand down, or at least fasten it to a substantial base

Dress the stones away from any job, the finer particles will travel, consider local extraction and clean the stand with a small paintbrush or vacuum ……. only blow it off with care or outside if portable

Wipe the pilot before dressing every time, and keep an eye on it for fit

Buy as many stoneholders as you can afford, pre-dress what you think you’ll need for that job …… try only to touch up as you go along

Keep the stones dry and on a rack, not all chucked in a box

If you end up wet grinding, keep stones dedicated for that and check more often

Break up any stone you suspect with a hammer and bin it

[Other safety measures accepted]

That's just most of the stone related stuff ...... I bet I've missed something #-o

Thanks guys for your input,I am happy with all my new equipment so now the fun part of spending a lifetime on what works and what does not work as far as seats and angles for application.
