Turbo Camshaft

Post by Tightwad »

I'm looking at putting together a car/engine just to play
around with. It's a bunch of cast off parts I have access to.

Car will weigh around 2800 lb with driver.
C4 Trans with Brake and an 8" or 9.5" PTC Converter matched to combo (We have each that can be reworked by PTC).

4.6 2V OHC V8 Ford
PI 2V Heads (Unported - 170 cfm or so at 0.500 and average 80% Exh Flow).
0.020 over Ford WAP Aluminum Block
Manley 18cc 0.020 Forged Pistons (Cobra Termi replacements) - Estimate 9.4 Compression (depending on finished block height)
Stock Cobra Crank
Stock Cobra H-Beam Rods
Stock PI Intake Manifold
Chinese Turbo T4 69/77 1.05 AR (May be replaced later by a real turbo).
Cheap Chinese Air/Water Cooler.
Holley HP ECM.
80 lb Injectors (I think they match pretty well with that turbo and E85).

My understanding is the limit for IV clearance is about 3.0 degrees (0.050) IVO BTDC (We could gain a little by beveling the intake valves without having to cut the pistons).

My admittedly dubious math says something around a 229/230 (0.050), 112 LSA, 111.5 ICL. We just so happen to have a TFS 0.550/0.550 262/264 228/230 112 that I think would work pretty well.

Im likely overthinking this as it's a pretty simple lower power combo. I would be happy with power in the 700-800 hp range. Really don't need to chase the 4 second boys (1/8 mi) at my age. I've been out of this game for 30 years but used to run 6.20's @ 2870 lb with 600 hp doesn't seem to far a stretch.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

That TFS cam will be fine for what you're doing. It's not perfect, but neither is any of the other parts you're putting in.

Thanks, Mike.

If things take their usual course it won't be long before the heads, turbo and fuel system get upgraded and I will give you a call about a real cam.
