"Shop Truck" 350 SBC Cam And Carb Choice??

I"m in the process of building a 350 SBC for a 67 C10 fun, parts runner shop truck. The main goal for this engine is reliability and ease of operation
What I have is your basic 350 +.030, Block deck at 9.013, stock 10/10 crank, resized 5.7 rods, Sealed Power H345 pistons. According to the math the pistons will be @ .025 down. A FelPro shim head gasket will yield 9:1 compression and .040 quench which should be good to go.
I have a Comp Cams 12-231-2 cam i would like to use, its 432/453, 202/214@.050, 111 LS. Would this be a reasonable cam for this build? The next question is carburetor choice. I currently have a Weiand stealth with a 600 vac. secondary Holley. My other option is an OE aluminum Qjet intake off a 305 and Qjet setup for it.
Ant input and suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Cold or high humidity weather start up icing may be an issue with the weiand intake and the holley carb.
But the aluminum rochester intake and carb will be fine. Also make any linkage setup easier. Does the rochester use an engine heated electric choke mechanism as well??
If it does they work well for cold morning start up. If headers are planned then a steel tube wrapped around a primary tube will supply the heat.

Something like an Isky 270 mega cam would’ve more fun 😂

I have pretty much the same set up in a 83 GM B body. My cam is 12-207-3 with stock 882 heads and a Performer intake and Q jet with headers and dual exhaust and a TH350 with a 2500 rpm converter. It is very reliable, easy to drive, and enough power to get out of its way and is fuel efficient with the Q Jet but for me it is lacking as I am used to 550-660 hp street cars. I have a set of Vortec heads that will go on to wake it up or I'm putting a 540 hp 406 in the engine hole. Right now its a 9 second car...0-60 lol. If you're not looking for power but just something easy to drive then it'll be ok but if you want some decent tire burning power and have some fun then I don't think you'll be happy.

From stock 882 heads to vortec could easily gain 30-40 HP. :D

A 256 or 262 Isky Mile A More is best of both worlds.
Smooooth idle and large torque curve tons of bottom end make it a perfect choice.
A shop truck has either balls to the wall performance for the owner only to drive OR
Something civil but still has great street manners but will still make great power for the pee ons to PU parts and deliver
stuff for the shop

Getting a camshaft which has to much intake duration is a certain No-No.
Your cam choice is reasonable.
I prefer the L-69 O.E.M. 305 H.O. camshaft with 1.6/1 rocker arms for that kind of build; your choice is close to the same with a bit more overlap and you already have it.

The Q-Jet can be a great piece if tuned correctly. Personally, I like that carb on a "Performer", (not RPM), intake manifold.

Thanks for the replies everyone. My goal for this truck is a mild stock like manner something my wife can jump in and head to town for groceries. So its seems I'm on the right track. I forgot to mention the heads are a set of World Products S/R's I got in a horse trading deal. I just went through them and did a good valve job on them. I think I'll try the cam I have because as usual the budget plays into the situation. I'm leaning towards the Qjet option. I have a couple electric choke cores to choose from, the only issue and I don't think it will be too tough to get through is the linkage for the TH700 TV cable. Thanks again.

You didn't mention exhaust, it can dictate cam choice to some degree. Small cams and over 9:1 compression can cause the engine to ping on regular gas. The cost difference between fuel grades used to to be a nickle or dime, but lately I have been seeing a half dollar or a dollar. I like the Performer/QJ combo as well, I have ised it many times with good results. Most carbs as big as a QJ won't produce the fuel economy. They can be tricky if you use a big cam, but are fine with 10-15 degrees over stock.

Exhaust will be stock ram horn manifolds which I believe are 2 in. going to a most likely 2 in. dual setup. I'm looking for a relatively quiet system.

Agreed, but with those flattops, compression will likely exceed 10.1:1
replacement vortec L31 dish pistons w/ metric ringpak are nice https://www.summitracing.com/parts/slp- ... pe/pistons
H815 will likely put compression right at 9.63:1
both mahle & npr have equivalent L31 pistons
plus, vortecs' altogether different intake as well

Right on with that CR calculation... IIRC, that's right where mine ended up with H815 pistons, 0.045" deck, and vortec 062s that ended up measuring 63cc.

You know how this shop truck thing always turns out :D Well we are just riding in the city. So 456 gears and an 8 inch converter are next. Shop trucks are only made for the Boss to drive. It is how to let off some steam  I used to have an 11 second wagon for a shop car. Did I mention you have to put nitrous on it too. :D

sometimes, parts runs do become urgent! 8)
