MSD Distributor Drive Gear type

Post by RT Machine »

Hi, can someone please tell me if a MSD SBC ready to run distributor [ recent purchase ] has an Iron gear that is nitrided as standard ?
And is it this part no. with following spec :-
P.N. 8531
Outer hardened layer 55 to 60 HRC
Micro polished
Ductile /SG iron
Melonite QPQ Coated

And if this is what is fitted to the distributor as standard, is it compatable with a COMP CAMS cast iron Nitrided flat tappet hydraulic cam.

If the gear is as above, it should be compatible yes ?
P.N. 12- 246- 20 Extreme Energy NIT for a mild build ive just finished.

Thanks in advance.

Again far from an expert, but it has always been my understanding that you should use a distributor gear that is softer than the camshaft gear. Idea being if you wipe out a gear it's easier to replace the distributor gear than to replace the camshaft or cam gear. I think iron on iron is ok, it's when you have a steel gear that problems can occur unless you mate it with a bronze gear. Interested to hear what some of the Experts have to say as well.

Couple of articles that seem to have some good info......again I'm far from an expert.

Never had a problem with distributor gears ever, i blue them up and shim them to run as perfect as can be expected, i use steel melonized gears, on all cams except 8620 where i use aluminium bronze gears, but this is the first time ive used a nitrided cast cam, so i am just asking if MSD STD iron gear is suitable, since no one wants to offer any feedback , i will install a steel gear and forget it :D

Here, I'd be inclined to use a melonized aka melonite gear.
