Billet hyd roller cam core....which gear?
So my stock iron distributor gear is starting to show moderate wear after only a few dyno pulls. 50'ish lol. I have both a composite and a hardened steel gear. Which is best for a 1050 billet core? Application will be street

Composite then, be easy on the rpm until the oil thins (warms up). Inspect after a few runs. You could always contact the manufacturer and ask them.

The Chinese HEIs that I buy here [ $80 for a Chev, $100 for the others ] all come std with steel dist gears. I have had one in my car for 2+ yrs now, zero wear, Comp steel roller cam. I see steel gears now offered for Chrys engines.

FYI
When ordering a billet cam regardless of which engine ask about the street dist.g ear option.
I know Isky does it which is to take the dist. gear and rear journal off and machine a P55 gear and rear journal and press
it on to the billet core and pin it in place.
I do this alot for marine engines as well as street builds either solid or Hyd. cams as no one wants to use a cast core for a serious build anyway.
Yeah I know there are some guys that do or have done it but the quality of the cams have gone down hill.
Mercury marine which used Crane to produce cams for the BBC engines were steel with the street gear conversion done which I where I learned about that 30 odd years ago. been doing it ever since on both BB and sm Blk builds.

If you have their steel cam can't they supply the correct gear??
Or are you using the TA recommended gear and are seeing accelerated wear on it??
Even the HV pump kit for a stock cover don't create that much load on the distributor to wear a gear that fast.
I think TA has their own pump and cover setup that produces more oil pressure drag on the dist. gear but have not confirmed that.
I am doing a stroker 455 buick hot street build at present and have not looked at the cover and pump parts yet.
I am waiting for the hard block to cure before the main girdle is fitted and front block face machined to install a lifter bore girdle for a roller.
While this is more of a repair job to replace a damaged block from a flywheel blow up but the cover and pump that was used in the old block I can check with my customer and find out what they used before.

It seems everybody is finally getting on the melonized gear band waggon. Hughes Engines, Chrysler specialists, now have melonized gear drives for steel billet cams.

I originally used a used GM HEI steel gear which wore surprisingly quick. I have a standard oil pump with new wear plate, OEM cover, 10w30 oil, 70 psi spring and let the oil warm up before pulls. So I don't think the oil pump drag is too high.If you have their steel cam can't they supply the correct gear??

They recommend their hardened steel gear with a steel cam core, but also recommend bronze gear with a roller, which i don't want to use.
So I got their hardened steel, along with the BOP composite gear. Just wondering which will last longer.
