383 TIMING

Post by c1500sbc »

I have fresh 383. 10.68:1 compression, weiand street warrior dual plan intake, edelbrock 750 carb, promaxx maxx series 200 cc heads and a crower hydraulic roller 236/240 at .050 with a lift in the mid 500's.

I have never run a 383. Previous motors have all been 350/355, so i'm unsure on timing curves. I was thinking 18 initial and 16-18 mechanical all in by 2800-3000?

Since this sounds like a new combo for you, and especially if this is the first time the Carb is being run I would start out at a safer 16 initial.

Also start off with a fresh set of plugs and after 3 full throttle runs with little idle time pull them and check them for signs of problems.

I have run very similar in the past
32 degrees total seem a good starting point
I run locked timing with 6AL programmable
You will have to find the curve that suits you.

34 to 36 seems to be the norm for most sbcs but you might want to slow the curve out to 3500 or even a bit more, higher compression engines can lose torque from excessive timing at the lower and mid range in some instances. Your cam might be big enough in duration that it doesn’t mind a quick advance curve.

i would start from the save side:

14 intitial + 18 mech. for 32 total @3000-3500rpm.

Then check for pinging and increase init. to maybe 16-18 and mech. to 34-36 or bring all-in earlier 2500-3000
