SBC ProCharger Cam

Post by 1700camaro »

Looking for some help with a cam for SBC with a ProCarger. I called 2 recommended well known cam companies. They were both very close in their recommendation, but the cams seems huge duration wise. 279*/ 283* on the intake @ .050 & 285*/287* on the exhaust @ .050, they were both around the .700 lift range, 114 lobe separation & both wanted them installed 4* advanced.

I told them this was for a bracket car & wasn't trying to set the world on fire. My goal is 850-900 hp at the crank. The current motor is a mild 434 sbc that makes 630 hp @ 6,100 at the crank. The major engine parts are being freshened/re-used. World Products Motown block, forged rotating assembly, Brodix 18x spread port heads. The compression is being lowered from 11.5 to 9.5 & the cam is being changed. The current cam is custom Comp Cam; 266* In./272* Ex. @ .050, .688 lift In./.631 Ex. on a 108 lobe separation.

The car is an 80 Camaro that weighs 3050 with driver. It has a 1.76 glide with a 5900 stall 9" convertor. The rear-end has 4.11 gears & we mainly run a 29.5x10.5 M/T pro bracket radial. The car has ran a best of 9.92 @ 136 & is detuned to run 10.0s. The convertor & gears will probably be changed for the new combo. Looking to run High 8s with new combo.

What RPM do you want to turn it?
What heads are on it?
What rocker ratio?
How much boost ?

If they are 18 degree C heads you can use a pretty small cam and boost will dictate rpm to a point.
If they are 18 degree X heads you want some more cam.

I ran a 264/278 114+4 on a 374 with a F2 ran 7.70@180 3400lbs on 35lbs boost.

I ran a 255/266 112+2 on a 421 with a YSI made 850whp@6500 on 12lbs made 925@7000

I ran a 236/236 110 on a 408 LS3 D1SC made 770whp@7400 on 12lbs

if you are only looking for 900 i would suggest a new converter for sure. because you could make 900 just above its stall depending

I would contact Mike Jones (CamKing) or Glenn Steyers Gs Products

We currently shift @ 6600 & go thru the traps @ 6900-7300 depending on altitude. Would like to keep it in the same range.

Brodix 18 SP X, the 2nd one down on chart.

T&D rocker shaft 1.6 In., 1.5 Ex.

No more than 15 lbs.

Thanks MT for the info. I wanted to keep our general cam numbers but configured for the ProCharger (F1-A94). Yes, the convertor is getting reconfigured also.

This will keep the RPM range the same, and make your power goals.
Cam# SBC, R78440-82465-114
260/274 @.050"
.440"/.465" Lobe Lift
.686"/.680" Net Valve Lift (after lash) w/1.6-1.5 rockers
114 LSA

Thanks Mike,
Is this a small base circle cam?
My current cam is a 4-7 swap, as were the other 2 recommended cams. Is this needed or will it hurt to have it?

.900" Base Circle
There's no need for a 4/7 swap, but we can grind it on a 4/7 swap. There's no price difference.

Car is getting chassis updates as we post. When I get it back the motor & trans is coming out for updates. I'll call you when I'm ready to order the cam.
Thanks again, Bryan

MT,
Did you dyno any of these combos without boost? If you did how does affect the rpm peaks for HP & torque?

I saw an engine masters video where the torque peak raised from 5,000 rpm to 5,700 rpm & HP peak raised from 5,500 rpm to 5,900 rpm N/A compared to boost on a mild 350 sbc. The cam was a 230/230 110 comp cam hydraulic.
