I'd clean and dry the rod and look again.
Probably do some dye pen/Spotcheck/Zyglow inspection.

That cluster a bit down from the piston is suggestive of a weld repair on a porous or internally or externally filthy casting, or welded on a day with high humidity etc.

the engine runs on alcohol?

It is possible the bore finish was too smooth and not enough oil was allowed to "cling" to the cylinder wall and lubricate the works.
