Max. Effort Dry Sump Oil Pan For S.B.C. Drag Race

Post by swampbuggy »

Iron Eagle block with spread oil pan rails
Stroke is 3.375" / 3 -3/8"
Steel Rods
It will have ( 4 ) Scavenge lines to the Pan

Here are the questions i have...
1. What was / is the purpose of building ( 4 ) segments for a V-8 engine Dry Sump Oil Pan ?
2. When ( 4 ) segments are built into the pan, are windage screens Not employed ?
3. Does the ( 4 ) segment pan Design change the Depth of the pan ?
4. Would a segmented pan be more likely to have a kick-out on both sides ?
5. Are there any Negative results to building this style of pan shallower than an average depth D. S. Pan ?

Thanks for any answers to the questions above, Mark H.

A 4 stage scavenge system is not always just in the oil pan.
Most times there is 2-3 in the oil pan and a PU line in the engine valley area towards the rear of the block.
As all the oil will be flowing to the back of the block you need to use vent tubes to stop oil drain back into the center of the block.rotating assembly.
If using screens in the valley area this is a must since the screens don't allow oil to flow freely through them regardless of temp. As well the valley area holds about 7-8 quarts of oil by itself so removing it from the valley area is a must.
What makes it to the lower part of the pan is from bearing oiling. Some times there is also lines to the rear of the cyl. head to remove oil from the top of the engine.
What type of system are you thinking of using???

The pump will have ( 6 ) Stages, (4) to the pan, (1) to the back of the solid floor lifter valley, and (1) pressure section. Mark.

Most if not all dry sump pans do not have a kick out but a oil recovery pouch on the one side is common as the crank scraper has to have a place in the pan to send the oil to so it can be sent back to the tank for have air removed much the same as a windage tray breaks up the air bubbles in the oil..
The need to totally seal the engine is the same as when using a vacuum pump as it draws lots of vacuum in the block.

the pan design will depend on the front chassis clearance for the scavenge fittings location.
I have seen a couple pans in real tight chassis that use PU connection fittings on both sides for clearance to other parts in the front of the chassis.
