200 L6 ford bearings...help

Post by gn69z28 »

I'm trying to assemble a 200 L6 with 7 main bearings. Crank is .010 under. There appears to be no main bearings available anywhere. I prefer the partial grooved bearings. Liberty parts said August maybe. Rock auto said none available. Summit says ships from manufacturer. We tried to order from summit a month ago and they say no bearings yet. Customer has been patient but it's been almost 2 months since he brought us the engine. Anyone here know of any source that may have bearings in stock? It took several weeks just to get a rear seal. But finally found one. And when it showed up there were two in the box. Now I just need main bearings. Thanks for any help.

Tried rock auto and nothing available. Also tried Northern auto parts. Nothing anywhere I can think to look.

Ok the bearings from NPD are fully grooved. What's the opinion on fully grooved main bearings? I've always tried to avoid them but if it's the only thing out there then I guess I'll have to use them. Egge doesn't specify if they are for a 4 or 7 main bearing crank. With the low price I'm guessing 4 main crank. I'm working with a 7 main crank. Found a set of old stock Michigan 77 bearings on eBay but were for a 4 main crank.

Just a thought. Have you tried the regular auto parts stores? Oreilly's, Napa, Advance, AutoZone, Carquest Federated....etc in your area. I'd be willing to bet that they can source them.

This may be of some help to you, I don’t know?
I see in the Federal Mogul bearing book that the L4 140 cid motor of 1984 - 91 uses those same separate bearings to make up a set and has 5 main bearings.

The L6 170 cid motor from 1961-72 uses those same bearings, but only has 4 mains.

The 153 cid L4 motor from 1986 to 91 uses those same bearings as does the 144 cid L6 from 1961- 64.

If your concerned with using non grooved bearings instead of 1/2 or fully grooves then just cross drill the crank, or double cross drill it as the need presents itself!

Take whatever bearings you can find. The 200" 6-cyl with seven main bearings can't make enough horsepower to hurt itself.

I've never used them but I think of fully grooved bearings as being like grooved tyres. Less likely to aquaplane, which is what you want with tyres on a wet road, but not what you want with an oil film between a crank journal and a bearing.

The engine is a 1964. The original bearings that came out of it are stamped 2 64 on the back.

Try Australian sources.

Lots of '3.6' litre Ford Falcons were sold here.
