Dropped a helicoil in bbc cyl head water jacket. Please help

Post by Machtuck »

Stupid me, dropped a new helicoil in attached water jacket and cannot fish it out. I would rather not yank the head. Tried a magnet and vaccum- no joy. Maybe leave it? Sounds crazy but i doubt it would pass through radiator core. Thanks in advance for any help.

Out of sight, out of mind. It's too big to migrate to anywhere important.

Can you roll the engine over if it's on a stand and blow some compresses air in there to see if it will come out? At least it in the water jacket and not the oil pan.

Thanks, yes it’s on a stand. I’ll give that a try. Does this jacket go through a passage on the block deck. I looked at a set of head gaskets that i have and it looks like a small hole. I don’t think the 3/8” helicoil will pass into the block. I pulled the water pump off and could not locate it in the block.

Forget it's in there....it won't do anything and likely will be there long after that block has been retired to the scrap heap.

I can't imagine it being easy to get through the thermostat. It wouldn't bother me to run it. You should see the kind of junk that come out of blocks water passages.

The good news is that it wasn't a 10mm socket.
