Ported L-29 Head Test Soon

Post by 1980RS »

Just got my conversion head gaskets so I can try out my Ported L-29 BBC heads soon vs my Ported Peanut Port heads, all else will be the same. The L-29's still retain the stock valve sizes as if I were to put in the larger valves there for sure be shrouding and that's counter productive. I was going to get them flowed this month but the guy I use said it will be Sept. before he can get to them and I am not waiting that long. I really want to see how these stack up to the little pp heads I did a few years ago. So far the 360's with 8:1 compression has gone 11.16@119mph, I know there will be a slight pump in compression which should help and we will see if these deliver the big tq. that the SBC Vortec's deliver.

This project is underway, I started taking the 360 peanut port stuff off the 461 tonight. I really have to give Chad Spire props for the burr finish he does. While, I by no means am nearly as good as Chad is I tired to go this on my heads and intakes also and I am sold on it. When I looked down the intake ports of the heads tonight they are the cleanest valves and ports I have ever seen on any of my engines. L-29's got the same burr treatment inc. the chambers. Will post some pics as the new heads get put on this weekend.

I am using the same Crower cam I used with the peanut port heads as not to skew the test. It's FDP-274 flat tappet solid cam. The cool thing about this cam is it's on a 105° and even though it narrows up the power curve it does have some explosive torque. It's like .474/.510 lift and 241/252 duration. I will use the same Air Gap intake on this as it will have stronger 60 and 660ft. numbers at the track.

How much did you modify the vane in the intake port?
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.

On the advice of a very good head porting guy around here I took most of it out so we will see if it hurts or helps. He has a set of 317 LS heads that he take the vane completely out when max porting the heads, must not be too bad the engine they went on made well over 650hp.

Found out today I have to drill some extra holes in the deck of my block to make this conversion work without over heating.

Yes with the head gaskets I used there are 2 holes to drill in the deck at the bottom, pretty easy when you don't bust a drill bit off in the deck.
Will be next month when I get to test this at the next Muscle car race.

Heads are on and this new set of late model L29 heads will be ready for a test in a few weeks. Hope it does not overheat.
