GM 383 oil pump screen installation

Post by streetperf »

Maybe I'm missing something new. I just saw a new GM 383/435HP crate engine with the pan off. The oil pump screen was installed and welded at a 45' angle from horizontal. When you measure the height from the pan gasket to the top of the screen it measured 7 3/4" the depth of the stock pan was 7 1/2" so I presume the tip of the screen was hitting the bottom of the pan. Is this something that is common or did GM screw up? This engine just came off the crate. Never been started.

Sounds like somebody screwed up. One of my customers bought a GM crate engine a while back and he brought it by to show me the tag on it that said "manufactured for General Motors" It didnt say who "manufactured it. Sounds like they are subbing them out.

If the pan was installed and had to press/bend the welded pickup, there should be a slight witness mark I'd think. Did you put a straight ruler across the pan and measure at the point the pickup would be?

Aren't most of the small block stuff being done in mexico now? Wouldn't surprise me if they are assembling their crate engines there now too, at least the gen1 sbc stuff.

On the heels of prior administration's successful move to end NAFTA and replace with USMCA, GM shifted most of the sbc production from Mexico to its long-time partner SRC at Springfield MO USA. Perhaps that "new" 383 was one shipped from Mexico? One tattletale is price ... retail pricing went way up from Mexican levels.
