Jesel crank seal install??

Post by Racer18 »

Small block chevy with big block snout, seal runs on the crankshaft. What is the trick to installing this without damaging the seal? Already fubarred one seal, tad bit expensive!

Take the woodruff key out first.

I've been in your position before. From memory, the issue is that the crank does not have enough of a chamfer to get the seal started. I used to make a tool for this, which pilots on the crank snout, and tapers out to the main journal diameter, giving the seal a nice gentle guide, almost makes it fun, lol.

I just had a call from an engine builder the other day, ended up selling him mine, and I'll end up making more when time allows, or the need arises.

Thanks, Ryan! That is exactly the issue. The dyno adapter plates are working great by the way!

Cellophane/plastic, like from a cigarette pack & a little tape to make a tapered cone, so it'll slip over the edge.
Also, does that edge that's F'ing it up have to be there, chamfer/radius it?

I tried that, tried a cone drinking cup too, but the size difference is too much for anything flimsy. I cut down a rear seal install sleeve and am going to try that in the morning. Time to drink bourbon now lol.

Great news on the plates, I did not connect the dots until I saw Indiana!

The seals I used, were the two lip style from Signal Seal, for pulling vacuum, and have to go on dry, so I can't see how someone could install it without some kind of rigid install tool... but then I did a wet sump with the stock seal and it was plenty stiff as well... was glad I had the tool. Made about 10 of them and sold out thru the years.

I could machine one but you likely need it sooner than I could get it to you.
