Rev limiter?

Post by Nut124 »

Stepped on it in 2nd gear. Shifter fell off-gear at WOT. RPM got very high, in excess of 8000, very briefly, off scale.

I need to fix the 2nd gear not staying put but I think I want a rev limiter. Any out there that do not require replacing the entire ignition?

This is my -78 Fiat twincam. Has the GM electronic ignition control module.

You can wire MSD 8728 to just about anything.
It's under 200bucks, but this might be a great time to think what other functions you might want in an ignition upgrade, timing control and a bigger spark.

Here's something that is non-electrical, sometimes refereed to as Lucas

The weight slides out contacts that ring & arcs to the opposite side, path of least resistance.
a tube cemented to the rotor, weight & spring inside could do the same, to the cap's terminal or shaft..
Good luck.

The MSD 4 pin HEI module #83647 has a built in rev limiter. It also switches 7.5 amps of coil current, compared to ~5.5 amps for the stock module.

Anybody know the size, dimensions of the MSD 8728? I cannot find such info in anyMSD docs.

You might look at the Pertronix D7200 HEI module with adjustable rev limiter. I have used it and like it.
