Need advice on valve springs for my BBC cam...

Post by patrickonb »

Hi All,

I'm going to use this cam with my 460 BBC:
https://www.compcams.com/drag-race-262- ... 6-454.html

If you look in the recommended section, you will see Comp has two different sets of springs they
recommend for this cam.

Here:
https://www.compcams.com/dual-valve-spr ... ner-1.html

And here:
https://www.compcams.com/dual-valve-spr ... ner-1.html

I'm using a set of updated 781 heads, with the larger 2.19/1.88 valves, bowl hogged, and valve
unshrouding.

Which set of springs should I use with my setup? Any input and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

My lifts are very close to yours. Comp solid nitrided cam. Jones EDM lifters. I went with PAC1220X beehives along with the PAC retainer and spring locator made just for this application. The retainers are small and light. The seat and open pressures with the beehives ended up being what I wanted and my Son has smallblock with a solid cam running beehives that's working really well. The 924's' just wouldn't give me what it needed for pressures both open and closed. Hope to be firing it up soon.https://www.racingsprings.com/index.php ... 11365.html

Is your short block already assembled?

No, block and heads are in the machine shop now.

If you want the full air flow benefit of stepping up to the bigger 2.19” valve and can afford a 2.5 CC increase in your total CC size then laying back the intake valve notch in the piston on its deep side is the thing to do !

This is something that should be done even with the stock valve size, no less the 2.19” size and up!

A lot of what you need will come down to how high you plan to turn the motor.

That being said, the 924 wouldn’t even be on my radar for that cam.

I don’t know if the 930’s would be rock solid to 7k in that application....... but 65-6700 intermittently should be fine.

Maybe upgrade to tool steel retainers.
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.

What’s your installed height? Can’t pick a spring without that.

Do yourself a huge favor and have the lifter bores corrected while at the machine shop. I would bet money that at least a few are not located properly.
