"Melonized" is a trade name for a shot-peened, ductile iron gear which has been Nitrided.

Some other manufacturers have them under a different name.

It's actually the name of the heat treating process, not the material.
"Melonized" is a form of salt bath Nitriding, and can be used on Steel or Ductile Iron gears. We run them against the 8620 gears we press on to our tool steel cam cores.

You can run the Melonized gears on 8620 and 1050 steel cams.

The "Melonite" process is supposedly proprietary.
So, others do what they can to make theirs as close as possible, to work the same.

Yes, I read all about it.
They call out a specific temp and time for each part of the nitriding process, and that recipe is what they call "Melonize".
Funny thing is, they listed the recipe, and any nitrider can follow it exactly.
