"Melonized" is a trade name for a shot-peened, ductile iron gear which has been Nitrided.
Some other manufacturers have them under a different name.
What distributor gear are you guys using for billet cams?

It's actually the name of the heat treating process, not the material.Walter R. Malik wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 12:17 pm "Melonized" is a trade name for a shot-peened, ductile iron gear which has been Nitrided.
"Melonized" is a form of salt bath Nitriding, and can be used on Steel or Ductile Iron gears. We run them against the 8620 gears we press on to our tool steel cam cores.
You can run the Melonized gears on 8620 and 1050 steel cams.

The "Melonite" process is supposedly proprietary.CamKing wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 2:10 pmIt's actually the name of the heat treating process, not the material.Walter R. Malik wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 12:17 pm "Melonized" is a trade name for a shot-peened, ductile iron gear which has been Nitrided.

So, others do what they can to make theirs as close as possible, to work the same.

Yes, I read all about it.Walter R. Malik wrote: ↑Fri Oct 15, 2021 11:49 am The "Melonite" process is supposedly proprietary.

They call out a specific temp and time for each part of the nitriding process, and that recipe is what they call "Melonize".
Funny thing is, they listed the recipe, and any nitrider can follow it exactly.
