Mahle piston clearance.

Post by gn69z28 »

I have a set of mahle Pistons. Part number 224366050mm, they fit a 2017 hm 6.0 gas engine for a Express 4500 van. We had to get the Pistons in individual boxes. They came with no paper work or information. Does anyone know the piston to cylinder wall clearance and measuring point or where I can locate it? I've tried a online search but came up empty. Thanks

And the dimension they'll give you will most likely be so tight (usually 0.018-0.054mm / 0.0007-0.002" max)) it will scare you. Most rebuilders tell us to run them OEM tight in the 6.0, the boring and honing procedure requires reading the book and using torque plates on both sides, everything torqued top, bottom, sides, front and back. (And yes, some cheat on the time required to do it right and just run them looser.) Your experiences may differ.

Examine the piston with your eyeballs
The minimum clearance and skirt size is usually engraved on the piston top.

The rest of the story. There are dimensions on top of the Pistons like was mentioned. Spoke with Mahle and was told the clearance dimension is wrong on top of piston. Writing on piston is .094 which converts to .0037 which seemed like a lot of clearance. Mahle guy said use .0015 for clearance.

Very strange. That clearance seems wrong. But what does it mean? Why would they do that?
I have seen some confusion in the LS engine family when a piston can be used in both an iron or aluminum block.
