Have you done a compression test, and if so what were the numbers? So many unknowns here. If this engine shows 175 psi or less I’m bolting the supercharger on. (Unless someone offers more than you paid)
I wouldn’t worry too much about mixture variations in pump E85, you’re not trying to optimize on 15 psi, you just want a little help with charge cooling. Speaking of charge cooling, since all these superchargers come with insufficient drive ratio, and the fact that you aren’t looking for a big bunch of boost, you should be pleased with the outcome at the lower boost level with the raised compression ratio, and at a slow drive ratio it shouldn’t raise the inlet temperature too much.

Compression is 170-175 on all cylinders. Good point to make as well. I’m just so tempted to try it now and just gunna see what happens. I’ll play it very safe on timing and listen very closely as well. Maybe I’ll be safe at the stock pulley configuration on pump. Considering that every time we have an engine on the dyno with a supercharger at some point we are bolting on more drive ratio, I’m quite sure you’ll be fine with the stock setup. Just go easy on the timing and jet up, so much easier to tune from the safe side.

Running on a dyno is not the same as running on the street.. In the real world conditions are VERY different..
The cranking pressure does not matter..
Compression ratio and combined effective compression ratio does..
The engine is not run WOT at idle rpm speed.
Find another engine to experiment on.
A cheap one.

If you must experiment do it with 100+ high octane unleaded gasoline in the tank.
Adding a small extra fuel cell to hold the race gas for experimenting makes this practical.
Lots of room to mount a small fuel cell under hood on a pickup for testing this.
I did this on my Firebird. It works.

It looks like JE Pistons has a decent Forged piston with a 31CC Dish volume to create a low pump gas friendly compression ratio (8.5:1 cr) for your 383.. with your 64cc heads {5.70" rods}.
A good basis for a street 383 Blower motor.
You will likely need to rebalance the rotating assembly if using your crank and rods to build.

the small blowers bolt to the intake with long bolts through the top of the blower. 142,,144,,162..the 174 also bolts through the top of the blower but will not fit on a small block.it was intended for the big block...the 177 has 6 bolts that hold the blower to the intake and the go along the side of the blower and not through the top.....Eric

So, I found a pretty good deal on a 177. $1900 with some extra pulley configurations, belts and gaskets. Older gentleman, looks to be well taken care of. He’s even covering shipping.
As per before, the plan is to try and lower compression and make the motor a little more boost friendly. With all that being said, and I know this has been asked a ton, but does anyone have any first hand, repeated experience, with what a four bolt main SBC block will handle in terms of HP?
I mean, if I leave the motor as is, add a 2.5” upper pulley on the 144, get a little meth injection kit, I think I can get 550 out of the higher compression set up. Which would be a much cheaper option. Plus, I got it to fit under the hood. The 177 is not going to. Which I don’t like.
Or, I can tear the block down, change pistons to lower compression, swap the 177 on it and probably get 600. Maybe a little more, but at that power level, I think I need to be concerned with the integrity of the block?

Even if you set yourself a 550 hp ceiling, it will last longer if with the larger 177 on a lower cr engine.
I would build another short block.. 350cid.
You can make 550+ hp on a stock dished piston low cr re-ring and bearing (krylon rebuild) 350 with your heads on it. W/ the 177. Its detonation under boost that will burn down any engine.. Reguardless of cost.
I'd put the 383 short block under the work bench, build a low buck, low cr 350 cast piston cast crank and have some fun. You can sweeten up your heads. bit and bolt em on.
A off the shelf solid flat tappet cam will more than get it done..

There is a guy locally selling a 350 vortec longblock for $400. Ended up doing the famous LS swap instead. Claims the motor only has 120k

Yes with a bit of freshening.. Avoiding detonation is the key. Low cr... Bigger blower turning moderate drive speed.. 550 hp is easy.
