mini a series 998cc pistons and rings

Post by benno318 »

hello everyone

bmc a series engine (this ones from a moke) the commonly available pistons for these things are still of the 3 compression rings and one oil ring variety.

tried searching with no luck - is there any proven advantage to leaving say the 2nd or 3rd compression ring out for less friction?

Just doing some machine work on one for a customer, and was wondering after i saw the pistons...

thanks in advance!

No experience on these, but the Studebaker Champion is a similar long-stroke-small-bore obsolete ring package. If one wants to do it right, buy custom pistons with modern thin rings.

yep i agree 100% that is clearly the best way, however this is a budget rebuild and all parts have already been purchased.

i am just surprised that there is no easy to find records of someone trying this, with results - good or bad. probably not even worth my time thinking about it haha

Just a thought but you might get an answer on one of the Mini forums. There are several. I'm sure this topic has been discussed before on those forums.
