This is pretty cool. Really need to see how quick the exhaust gasses leave the cylinder as soon as the valve cracks open. The rest of the stroke really just pushes the last bit out.
Also looks like his intake valve stays open for a bit while the cylinder is on the compression stroke.
Too bad he didn't run an exhaust pipe on it, I wonder if you'd see a scavenging effect if he did.

That's because air and fuel is still rushing in, the air is still filling the increasing void made by the downward stroke, even though the piston has started going up.
Air is mass, no use stopping it while it still carries momentum if you want to make power.
