a 440 inch small block can use pretty much any large head on the market, 235/245 afr or similar. even a 227, as when you have to run the 500cfm carb, thats going to be your restriction.

Why are you running a 440ci in a class restricted to a 4412 carb ?
Is there an RPM limit ?
With that 4412 carb, and 440 cid, the highest you can make peak HP is 5,300 rpm.

With a restrictive carb a big engine usually doesn't make if any more power than a smaller one, but generally has more torque.

It started its life out as a 430 with 14° RHS iron heads, we have to run a iron head, had a valve seat come outa one of them and beat up couple pistons and stuck 2 rings, so now its a 440 and want to go back to a 23° head

Th head that will work best with an 890cfm carb, is not the head that will work best for a 500cfm carb.
There's about an 1,800 rpm difference between where those carbs will peak.
With the big carb, you can go with the biggest 23 degree head you can find, but that will be way too big, with the 4412 carb.
