Looking at the specs of the spring that Turbobuick6 listed, I might try to find a locator closer to the i.d. of the spring. Spring i.d. .806, locator listed for those heads .780. I have seen a lot worse but .026 is getting loose. I try to stay .010 or under just to keep things from dancing around. no need to invite excessive clearances into the valvetrain. The retainer has .010 clearance on the outer spring and .101 on the inner spring, but you only have to locate 1. The inner spring is not going anywhere if the outer spring is located proper. It's not a major thing that just how I would handle it. Dan
Yes i agree. I don’t like the spring locator. It may be 0.780” but it has a taper on it that reduces the diameter on top of the retaining step. I’we seen locators with .790” or .810” step.
I also have steel retainers with 1.125” / .745” step and titanium retainer with 1.100” / .800” step. But the outside 0.030” has me concerned about that.

I would not be to concerned if the inside only has .006. If the springs are tight to each other with only a couple thou clearance. The inner spring located with very minimal clearances the outer spring has nowhere to move. I would make sure the retainer o.d. is .350"to.375" larger than the outer springs i.d. . Example 1.130 id spring + .350 = 1.480 so a retainer with an od of at least that, if the inner spring has.006 clearance on the retainer. Dan
Manley has a titanium and a tool steel retainer with a 1.120 outer and a .805 inner step for spring location. the tool steel is with in a couple grams of the Ti retainer in weight. both 10* locks. Dan

Thanks for the info Dan. I found the retainer and I like the tool steel idea for increased durability. These retainers however are only available for +.100” install height. I’m not sure how many shims i have room for. But i’m going to take the head apart later today to check the spring fitment with these parts i have available at hand.
Combo with the titanium retainers i have and an .810” i/d locator seems to be decent. The springs are very tight fit together I cant even push them completely apart. The springs go to bind at 1.270” in the wise with this combo. And the spring measured exactly as turbobuick said. They look like a nice spring for what they are.
Dan. The retainers measure at 1.45” o/d so they are exactly .350” larger than the step.

the 1.270 coil bind doesn't sound like you'll have enough clearance at max lift even at 2.000 installed width. 2.000 -.715= 1.285 giving only .015 from coil bind at max lift. Dan

Sorry ! What was supposed to stand there was coil bind at 1.1270”
