GMC 637 engine

Post by econo racer »

I think they came in the 1972 GMC cab overs. There around 5.12 bore by 3.75 stroke. Maybe 215 hp. But I am sure it could some how get souped up. I wonder if it could be installed in a nova easily. Anyone know about these?

You would be way ahead of the game by supercharging a small block!!

I watched a video on Youtube where a guy started one of these. These engines were used to power rear engined buses. The one he had was hooked to a transaxle.

60-degree V8 based on the GMC V6/V12 architecture. The 637 replaced the 702 V-12, and was made in gasoline and diesel versions.

I hope you have VERY low-numerical gears in that car, and the biggest front springs on Earth to hold it up.

Not a practical swap.

Great for a street rod, the valve covers can double, as fenders ;)

If nothing else you can use it to power a large kilowatt emergency generator for not only your house, but a few neighbors homes also, lol!

IIRC, both the V8 and the V12 were made concurrently. The V8 was used in trucks and buses because it was shorter. The V12 wouldn't fit in anything on the road, and was detuned and with smaller bores to run forever in stationery plants.

Seems like a good powerplant for some Rat Rod type thing you’d see Jay Leno driving around.
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.
