Breaking in a new DOCH cam ?

Post by Nut124 »

I have been following the recent threads about cam and lifter wear and it got me concerned.

I'm about fire up the engine with a new, big intake cam in my Fiat twincam.

Reading the cam instruction after the fact, I see that I should have removed a "protective oil coating" with solvent before installing the cam. I did not do that.

Should I worry?

Should I use a particular break-in procedure?

The cam that came out looked flawless after almost 20 years of hard driving. The same with the buckets/shims. No wear at all.

Yes, you should have.
That coating is just for corrosion protection and it will load up in the bearings and deter oil from clinging to the lobes and journals.

By the way the term is DOHC, not DOCH.
