What was the reason for putting pushrod in that location?

Direct flow to the valve. It's actually still a good design. You just have to keep the velocity up to make it work well at lower rpm.

They came out with again in the nineties for a nascar ford racing engine but it never made it to a car just the Motorsports catalog.
