What coil?

Post by 408 Nova »

Swapping out an HEI distributor to a small cap distributor to gain clearance for my throttle linkage on a SBC.

Going with a JEGS SSR-II Pro Series Distributor as this is a budget build.

There are a ton of coils for these things, from el cheapo to big money ones. It's a pretty healthy engine with 12.5:1 compression needing to run up to 7500 rpm.

What coil do I need?

That distributor requires a CD box. Different CD boxes have different coil requirements. Soooo which CD box are you using?

I would fly with a MSD 8207 coil, but keep in mind that with any high output coil and CD box that you need to feed it enough current.
No wimpy 18ga wire should be used.
If the total current draw is over 5 amps and the wire run distance is 8 ft or more then 16ga is what should be used.

If the wire run is 12 ft or more then the wire gauge should go up to 14.

Another common point of poor outcomes with these electronic items is substandard crimp connections.

I use or make bare male and female connectors and after crimping also solder then and then reinsulate then with shrink tubing.

It’s always worth the added time to do it this way.

I agree with the post above. I’we had great results with this Blaster SS coil with 12:1 engine. 36 nitrous jet in a fogger and up to 8000 rpm.

Blaster SS it is. $71.03 at Summit. That's a darn good price.

Buy two, one for a spare! Not had much luck with MSD coils myself Or cut out MSD and buy one w/o the sticker off of ebay for less than half the price, prob comes from the exact same place.

The MSD 8207 coil is a great coil & have used many of them without problems. It can be used with the MSD CD boxes or with HEI.
Depending on the CD box chosen, there may be a higher output coil that would be a better choice.
Why spend big bucks on the ign box but then fail to use the best coil you can??

Doing some makeshift coil testing the other day, trying to convince old mate he didn't need to replace his Bosch oil filled coil with a super duper coil for his basic Bosch switched Motec system. Left it in ign on posi not running and attended to a phone call, coil oil every bloody where, that's it on the left out of its case, still worked fine, got the coil that Motec recommends, don't know if it was arcing to the cardboard or the aluminum bench underneath.

This Ford style coil is also very good and works well with msd 6 style ignition. You have to make a bracket for it and buy the pigtail but for the price it’s great.

I'd be inclined to use this style rather than the oil cans. https://performancedistributors.com/pro ... rno-coils/
