S.B.C. Rod Bearings
We using Steel connecting rods in a Small Block Chevy application how common is it for the bearing shells to all be identical, meaning No upper or Lower. Any of the 16 shells will work at any location . Mark H.

That's how factory replacement bearings are. Racing bearings or the narrow HP bearings have upper and lower markings.

If they are narrowed and have a large bevel there is a difference. I got a set once that had 9 lowers and 7 uppers. The tang is reversed if I remember correct. putting a lower in the upper has the bevels on opposite sides of the rod.

Re: S.B.C. Rod Bearings
My supplier got 250 uppers and no lowers.
That was kinda useless......being as we aren't building Top Fuel Cars.

Well the Mahle-Clevite Rod bearings that i got lucky and located are Part # CB-1798 H . This part number is for a 1.8497 rod journal size, the shell is .750 " wide, every shell is identical and will work at any location, Upper or Lower . They are appx. .110" narrower than the Rod Housing Bore width . One thing is for sure the edge of the bearing will not contact the Crankshaft Rod Journal Radius at the cheeks . Mark H .
