my 406 had Canfield 205 int and 1.50 ex. I relooked. I am afraid that the big valve heads will be mushy on the bottom end

The torque converter selection is always critical on small cid. sbc's. , for racing.. If using the same converter that was behind the previous 406 expect abot 800 rpm LOWER flash stall off the line.
The lil 283 will want to rev up.
You want to launch way way up on the boost curve to leave hard with a 283-301..
