How much and often maintenance on 750 HP engine?

Post by 427dart »

Looking at a purchase of a 480 cube engine that makes 750 HP N/A @ 7500 RPM. Cam is of course a solid roller of top shelf quality being a roller camshaft bearing type and +750 lift. Compression is 13.5 and all top quality parts in the build. Has some limited drag strip use.

Would say a "High Maintenance" type setup if run at a max of 6500 RPM? Life span of the whole valvetrain measured in hours or miles of run time with some limited drives to the local cruise events? Yes it would need to run on that 20 buck per gallon race gas. The idle and low end of the engine is no that radical due to the cam design.

What are we talking, steel or Aluminum rods?
How much valve lift?
I will assume that with 480 cid, 13.5 comp and 750 hp that you have at least .650” at the valve, no?

My biggest concern would be the needle’s in the roller rockers if there not shaft mounted and the same in the lifters if there not the solid bearing type in terms of long term street driving under 4000 rpm .

Why? Whats wrong with a needle bearing that requires very little oil?

All of a sudden what worked for 45 years doesn't anymore?

Could you be less vague? Exactly what is this? A 480 small block or 480 inch big block. With that kind of compression you should be making that power before 7500rpm

All I was alluding to is that with the benefit of needle bearings many times race motors have the oil flow to the rockers restricted and a motor set up that way is in trouble at street rpm’s, and the new owner of the motor may not know such has be done it until the damage is already well in progress.

This was a big block engine that was built for the Factory Stock Appearing racing that we were looking at. However for the same money a larger cube engine with street type 10 to 1 compression and camming may better suit the needs.

Yes, agree, 480" is nowhere enough cubes for a street engine. ;>)

Also really agree, I'd be much happier on the street with 10:1 - 11:1 and a street roller cam.
