Cam timing, piston to valve clearance and different heads

Post by 6.50camaro »

I decided to change the cam in my 383 short block sitting on my engine stand. The cam going in is a Crane 260*/268*@ .050 180*/188*@.200 106* lsa .4168 lobe lift. And in checking piston to valve clearance I found some interesting info.
The heads are RHS 220 Pro action Aluminum, ProMaxx 225 Maxx Series and World Products Sportsman II. The RHS and ProMaxx heads have 64cc chambers the W/P's are 72cc. All heads have 2.055 /1.60 valves.
When the cam was degreed in it came out having a 105* LSA not 106* as labeled. Degreed in @ 101 intake centerline 109* ex centerline. All ptv clearance checked with roller springs with 240 lbs to 250 lbs seat force and .030 head gasket tightened but not torqued. w/ recommended lash and 1.5ex 1.6in rockers
The Sportsman II heads .060 intake ptv .075 ex ptv.
Promaxx heads .055 intake ptv .070 ex ptv.
RHS heads Valves never touched the .091 thick soft solder I used to check ptv clearance.
So just to pass on information that If you change heads on an existing engine it don't hurt to check ptv clearance as it can change depending on machine work and difference in manufacturing. I guess this makes sense put I never thought about it till I saw it myself . Dan
