So which heads will get my 358 in the high 10's
Right now my 358 pump gas SBC with mild ported Sportsman II's that have 2.05 and 1.6 with 64cc chambers has run the best of an 11.30@117.6mph. I would like to push this engine into the high 10's as it's a small goal I have right now. Here is what's the deal with what I have to run as of this moment. I have 3 different sets of heads but really want to keep it on pump gas.
Set No.1 Large port 206cc Vortec Bowtie heads mildly ported 2.00 and 1.55 valves
Set No.2 Dart platinum out of the box 200cc with 49cc chambers 2.20 and 1.6 valves no porting
Set No. 3 AFR 210cc competition CNC ported heads (and we all know what they flow)
Engine sports a .610 lift 250°duration at .050 in a 108 LCA cam and I can run a host of intakes and carbs. I have 1 3/4" Hooker S/C on the car.
Give me your reasons of which you think will have the best chance and what hp difference will each make over the World Heads I have now.

Nice to have choices as testing is fun.1980RS wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 8:16 pm Right now my 358 pump gas SBC with mild ported Sportsman II's that have 2.05 and 1.6 with 64cc chambers has run the best of an 11.30@117.6mph. My pick would be the vortec heads,I like the valve sizes for a 4.30" - 4.040" bore.
Good to see you are not to big on duration as well.
Probably to much compression with the 49cc chamber for pump unless you bandaid with different cam.
I had a AFR 210 on my bench and it still had turbulence issues even though it was CNC head.
I suspect you turn 7000rpm plus on the 358.
What intake manifold do you have for vortec heads ?
Looking forward to your testing Bob.
I am running mine this weekend so fingers crossed we run a 10 something

I spin this current combo to about 6800 with the 4.88's in the car, I can run any intake on the Vortec Bowtie heads as it's drilled for both patterns. As for the turbulence on the AFR's I was told if you rough sand roll the intake ports it will get rid of that problem, at least that what my one head porter says. Hope you combo runs good this weekend, keep us posted on the results.steve cowan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 8:40 pmNice to have choices as testing is fun.1980RS wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 8:16 pm Right now my 358 pump gas SBC with mild ported Sportsman II's that have 2.05 and 1.6 with 64cc chambers has run the best of an 11.30@117.6mph. Is it #2814 better plenum design, or the 300 -25 as they are my favourite intake at the moment

I have all 3, 2925 Ported S/V, a 300-25 Holley and the I have a Eddy S/V II. I know in past testing the ported S/V was better for me over my 300-25 in testing back in 2018.steve cowan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 9:07 pmDo you have a vortec super victor?1980RS wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 8:52 pmI spin this current combo to about 6800 with the 4.88's in the car, I can run any intake on the Vortec Bowtie heads as it's drilled for both patterns. Re: So which heads will get my 358 in the high 10's
Of the heads you have I'd stick with the sportsman's.
Change the cam - 264/268 on 108 centres, around .420/.420 lobe lift.
Add 1.6 ratio rockers to intake only.
Get compression to 11:1
If you have one a 300-25 strip dominator, if not then a super Vic.
750 carb.

What are your 60 ft times and at the 1000 ft mark?
How much does the car weight?
Also what rpm are you leaving at?
What rpm is the motor doing at the 1000 ft mark ?

You can cut a man's tongue from his mouth, but that does not mean he’s a liar, it just shows that you fear the truth he might speak about you!

I will have to find the time slips. I leave the line at idle and stab the throttle, no hesitation just scoots and pulls up the front wheels.
Re: So which heads will get my 358 in the high 10's
A couple of years ago I ran the 300-36 dual plane vs the 300-25 and even though the 300-25 strip dominator had a tenth on the dual plane it was skewed somewhat as the day I ran the 300-36 that spun the tires so I thing it's about a wash with the 2. I have had better luck in testing in the past with my S/V intakes. The Vortec 406 went 10.90's with the last one I ported.KnightEngines wrote: ↑Mon Jun 20, 2022 11:47 pm Of the heads you have I'd stick with the sportsman's.

I'd personally go with the AFR heads.

I know the AFR 195 have a good reputation but I thought the 210 was to small in the pushrod areaChopperScott wrote: ↑Wed Jun 22, 2022 2:49 pm I'd personally go with the AFR heads.
