splash zone epoxy and alcohol
I'm looking for something i can apply over splashzone epoxy in cylinder heads and intake manifolds to protect it from alcohol fuels. People have posted what works in the past, but i can't remember what it is.

I have been told if you coat it with clear epoxy paint it will hold up.
Re: splash zone epoxy and alcohol
Does 3m edge sealer 3950 work? I have doubts about the suitability of this product for the operating temperature in a cylinder head -51°C to +65°C.

Re: splash zone epoxy and alcohol
I have not experienced or seen any epoxy which will stand-up to alcohol; Z-spar / Splash Zone is one of the good ones when coated.
Coating with fiberglass resin seems to allow the longest time lasting.
Some will last a lot longer than others, even with a coating but, eventually will deteriorate to a point where it needs to be redone.

Splash zone and the POR15 gas tank sealer lasted 2 seasons in my intake port. It was not loose or leaking but was just starting to peel at the edges. When I freshened the heads I reapplied the epoxy and sealer.

I coat everything with Devcon 2-Ton epoxy clear. I've never had an issue. Nothing will last forever.
Dart sells some epoxy called Araldite Epoxy that is imported from Germany.

That Devcon does work well, I use it when cutting a groove in my floats for clearance with jet extensions (I make my own) and it has held up great.SpeierRacingHeads wrote: ↑Sat Jul 09, 2022 10:14 pm I coat everything with Devcon 2-Ton epoxy clear. I've never had an issue. Nothing will last forever.

Z-spar / Splash Zone / Kop-Coat ... all the same Epoxy
and the Goodson product just seems like they put Splash Zone into their cans
i've been using Splash Zone/Kop-Coat epoxy
along with Devcon 2-Ton epoxy clear ontop of Splash Zone
since late 1980's or early 1990's,
everyonce in a while , the Splash Zone epoxy will lift at the edges .
Note : very important for cast-iron Heads
"never use water to soften/smooth the Splash Zone epoxy" ,
instead i use Dupont 3608-S Lacquer Thinner to soften/smooth the Splash Zone epoxy
for both cast-iron and aluminum Heads .... aluminum Intake Manifolds too ,
then come back with Devcon 2-Ton epoxy clear ontop
after a few Days of drying time for the Splash Zone epoxy
for Methanol or Ethanol :
example : Craig's B/ND SBC 406 , he forgot and left Methanol puddled in Hilborn Injector Runners
the Methanol severly pitted and ate up some layer areas ,
i used Splash Zone w/Devcon 2-Ton epoxy clear ontop , it lasted about 1/2 season,
started to lift to point it might come loose ,
switched over to Belzona epoxy ( no Devcon clear ontop )
been in the Hilborn Injector Runners 4 to 5 years no lifting yet .
same results with 1 cast-iron Head cracked across Short Turn Floor's peak area ,
Belzona epoxy solved the problem .. no water leaks ,
been in the Intake Port for years w/Methanol .
Belzona epoxy seems to grind like cast-iron , and sort of like HIP process on aluminum Heads

i can't remember which Belzona epoxy number ??
call them up , see which one they recommend ?

Larry, so you mix the splash zone together with thinner? I always use water, but maybe I should change!
Speaking of firearm coatings. I sand blasted my front wheels and painted them with it. I do a lot of firearm dress ups, and this worked well!

Larry, so you mix the splash zone together with thinner? I always use water, but maybe I should change!
i use bare minimum amount of Dupont 3608S Lacquer thinner , just enough to make epoxy surface smooth wet look
i never mix the Lacquer thinner directly into the epoxy when mixing the A+B parts together , ( Yellow/Black = dark Green )
instead i put lacquer thinner on my hands or mostly on 1 finger and smooth epoxy surface + feather edges to Port walls
you'll see ... Dupont 3608S Lacquer thinner is like "magic" on SplashZone epoxy
what made me switch from water to Dupont 3608S was finding rust underneath SplashZone epoxy
in a cast-iron SuperStock Head ... that epoxy started to lift up in the Intake Port ,
so i knocked it out with a sharp blow with Hammer + large long screw driver... thats when i saw the rust underneath ,
and i had rough-carbide finish underneah it was perfectly clean material when i applied the SplashZone epoxy
but using water to help smooth epoxy caused rust film to form underneath epoxy
never seen that happen again after to switching to Dupont 3608S Lacquer thinner ,
another great thing ... the same Lacquer thinner also helps to clean up epoxy residue off mixing tray + off your Hands , etc .
Dupont 3608S Lacquer thinner is fast dry + least odor of thinners i've tested .
i also use it to clean most parts during heads + engine assembly
just an overall good product to have in your Shop .
Re: splash zone epoxy and alcohol
Makes me wondering, should we coat/paint the area to be epoxed prior to epoxy and sealer on top of the epoxy?
