Speaking of welding cast iron
I post this not to make fun of 3rd world techniques but to show how to do a first rate weld job on cast iron.
I had 3 major takeaways from this.
The welder is an artist.
The welder has the cleanest job there.
I don't want to know what chemical is in the barrel used for final cleaning.
Oh, any you will learn where the term fanboy came from.

Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
I wonder what his experience has been with chips in his eyes working around iron like that without safety glasses.
I like the foundry videos in similar working conditions.
There is one I like where they make a brake drum.

I spent about 1,000 times that to build my home foundry, never poured iron.

Those videos are a demonstration of incredible talent, human will power and hard work all put together. Totally impressive!
Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
There are a couple of places here in California that furnace braze cast iron they can make a combustion chamber that has been severely damaged look like it was never damage just like the guys that do aluminum heads.
Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
I wondered that too, if I get near a grinder I have stuff in my eyes even with glasses on.SchmidtMotorWorks wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 2:12 am I wonder what his experience has been with chips in his eyes working around iron like that without safety glasses.

I know one man ho uses a angle grinder, like it is an extension of his arm. One theory is, when you work without safety glasses, you are more careful and you keep your eyes almost closed. I remember beeing at least 3 times in a hospital, when i used a "mechanics" safety glasses, which are open at sides..SchmidtMotorWorks wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 2:12 am I wonder what his experience has been with chips in his eyes working around iron like that without safety glasses.

A balanced person dares to stagger, and modify ports bigger
Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
When I was younger I had long , thick eyelashes and never had anything get in my eyes. As the years added up they thinned and I now use safety glasses every time the grinder comes off the shelf. Damn golden years!

Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
After getting a 5mm long sliver of steel (wearing safety glasses) from grinding, fully embedded in my eye, and going through 3 weeks of eye scrapings to remove the rust rings that had formed, and tremendous pain I now only will use a full face shield. The thing about the piece of steel that got in my eye, I had no clue other than feeling like a piece of grit had gotten in my eye. Blinked a few times and it was gone. Only after a couple of days and waking up in agony did I notice the black spot in the white of my eye.

Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
Some 3rd world guys in dirt floor shops with no doors can do things I never thought possible. One recent You-Tube had a young man that welded a broken diesel crankshaft back together! Took him awhile but when there's no parts store within 500 miles and 'UPS' is by pack mule...... Hats off to them!
Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
I have seen some of the videos....Do you think the repairs last?
Motorcycle land speed racing... wearing animal hides and clinging to vibrating oily machines propelled by fire
Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
Those 'steel toe cap sandal guys' do well with what they've got .......SchmidtMotorWorks wrote:I spent about 1,000 times that to build my home foundry, never poured iron
Is that molasses added to the moulding sand ?
I'd have riddled the lining sand first, and then shovelled the rest in
The cope and drag look a bit Heath Robinson but obviously line up well enough
Pre-heating pitch to get it through the burner, ....... horizontal 'blasting', with a baffle to stop setting fire to the adjacent corn field
Cured graphite coat to stop the iron burning into the sand
The 'treading grapes' routine, lol
Must have missed something ..... I'll watch it again
Re: Speaking of welding cast iron
My guess on what was in the barrel he dipped it in to clean it in was probably muriatic acid. That's what it looked like since the rust was gone and the head came out with a little bit of a copper color.

Great job of welding, but he would get fired her in the US for safety violations.Dave Koehler wrote: ↑Mon Jul 11, 2022 9:42 pm I post this not to make fun of 3rd world techniques but to show how to do a first rate weld job on cast iron.

Molasses sounds too expensive, maybe some mixture of oil and tar?BCjohnny wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 2:14 pmThose 'steel toe cap sandal guys' do well with what they've got .......SchmidtMotorWorks wrote:I spent about 1,000 times that to build my home foundry, never poured iron
