What do you think the humpy thing in front of the valve guide area was for, that looks strange.

Larry’s work looks first class as usual.

But there’s just no excuse for SM to be making heads where the chambers are out past the popular gaskets.

The totally “non-standard” intake port opening size/shape also makes me shake my head.

Not a fan.
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.

I know their oval port intake needed a ton of work to be right on a BBC I used it on. Dang ports were smaller than the peanut port intake size.

its the Valve Spring Seat protrusion into the Roof of the Intake Port
its there to sort of max-out the Roof Area ... and gives more aluminum material thickness for underneath Valve Spring Seat

the GM Chevy Bowtie casting#14044861 has about the same Valve Spring Seat Humps in its Intake Ports

So I have to ask- if paying someone to do the work of making these heads 'right', how far away are you from just purchasing a decent set of heads outright?

Well it's not like they design or test their products.. They are all made for the "I want cheap parts" market, which outnumbers the " I want a quality part" market..
SM should just have a stall down at the LA Markets and sell their knock offs with the rest of "import" crowd.

Looks like a RHS BB head knock off. It's a cheap head. Lots of China castings floating around these days. Copies of everything. Foundry's are way behind getting raw materials. Steel and Aluminum are premium right now because the suppliers are all over the world. Some material only comes from one place. It's really bad out there. Bar stock, tubing and billets are backed up months. Not enough producers and manufacturers of raw materials.
