Melling M68HV mounting ears not machined
Gday everyone!
Have purchased a new M68HV oil pump for SB Windsor and have noticed the mounting ears are left raw cast. Where the underside of the mounting bolts would go isnt machined hence the bolts wont seat and will be on an angle. I am told this is normal? Thinking I will need to machine with a small fly cutter?
Interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this and how they have rectified please.
Thanks in advance!
Cheers

Reverse spotfacer is easiest way if you don't have access to a mill.
I have also done them on a vertical mill and horizontal mill.
However you end up doing it make sure you use a generous radius end mill / cutter as to not leave a sharp edge that can become a crack point.
If I don't like how my cut ends up blending into the casting I'll go in with a burr and fix the transition till it's to my liking.

I have used over a hundred of the Standard volume pumps and none are machined. Maybe their performance pumps are, I don't know.369windsor wrote: ↑Thu Sep 22, 2022 3:42 am Gday everyone!

Some have had excessive casting flash which I simply remove with a file.
An M68HV is for a 5.0L 302 engine. A 351W is an M83.
The O.E.M. pumps from Ford are not machined, either.

God bless cost-cutting, and excessive angular tension on the bolt shanks.

My 'performance' pump looks like the one pictured. I just used a 4-1/2" angle grinder with a new sharp edged disk and made it flat. Worked just fine.

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies, that points me in the right direction. Another question: does anyone make a stud kit to mount pump to block? I see ARP P/N 154-7005 but appears to be pump to pick up only.
Cheers again

Bolt won't undo itself at least.

You might break-off a pump ear but, you will never break-off those bolts.
"Cost cutting" through the years has nothing to do with it ... for the last 60+ years those pump ears were not machined.

This being said, they were cast fairly straight and parallel to the mounting surface... so no grinding/milling was really required. The last couple I've seen were really crooked to the point they needed ground parallel. A 4-1/2" grinder turned upside down using the top edge of the blade works okay. It might do some 'collateral' grinding to innocent areas, but works just fine. It's what I've done to the last couple. I don't have a mill, and this is quick/easy.Walter R.
