Truck 496 BBC Cam Help

Post by RevTheory »

Happy Holidays, fellas.

I got sick of waiting for a DART 4.125 bore block and my machinist just happens to have a 454 holding the floor down in his garage so I'm switching gears and doing a 496 for my truck.

There are a couple of schools-of-thought regarding camming big blocks so I'm reaching out for some opinions here. Hydraulic roller, btw

496
10.25-10.4(ish) compression. Not sure on piston options yet.
AFR 265 heads with 2.25 valves being installed. 2.64 mcsa according to the website.
Probably another Performer RPM Air-Gap w/ Holley Terminator X TBI
Peak HP RPM up close to 6,000 but preferably that'd be about it.

1983 Chevy K10
35 x 14.5 mudders
Well-built 700r4
4.56 gears

My first guess would be along the lines of some Bullet lobes mostly because they have a metric shit-ton of them listed:
289 adv., 232 at .050, 156 at .200, .403 lobe, .685 lift with 1.7 rocker
291 adv., 234 at .050, 153 at .200, .361 lobe, .614 lift with 1.7 rocker (AFR's killer, raised exhaust port)
108 +4

If this were a street rod or something that would likely never get traction, I'd be inclined to widen things up but it's a truck with some big-ass tires. How would you approach it?

Thanks!

i guess it would depend if its just a pretty street truck with big tires, or an actual mudder. just picking somewhere in the middle id ballpark 230x235 on a 112, and .600" both sides.

I think your best option is to fill out the cam rec. form on Jones cams site and ask him. I think your gonna leave a lot on the table by camming it to stop at 6000rpm, with the gear, tire, and cid. you mentioned. I'm gonna guess with the CID your playing with, you can gain significantly more torque and HP with about 10° more cam on both sides than you mentioned and still shut if off at 6000rpm if you chose to. Although I do agree you should be honest with yourself as far what the intended purpose and out come is you expect. Most people don't realize, going a little too small on the cam for a street engine is much better than going a little too big when you are guessing at it. If you want massive torque right off idle, the options you mentioned will work. If you don't mind waiting until 1800rpm or so you will gain a good chunk around 3500 or so by going up in duration for that CID.

That will peak at about 5,600rpm, and fall off fast past that.

You want a 55mm cam, ground for big inch engines, running methanol injection/nitrous. .903 lifter stuff.....If for any reason it doesn't run as you'd hoped, you can send it to me.....

What do you feel is a safe (I know it's totally dependent on the lobe) valve lift for a 100% street application? My only frame of reference is a small block with smaller cores and 1.6 rockers so .680 just seems stupid to me. BBC cam core and 1.7 rockers, though? The lifter bores will be trued up and bushed.
